Dragon Heist • Session 36 Recap • Trollskull Manor
Shadows in the Vineyard
Played: March 06, 2026
The Scarecrows of Stoutfellow Farm

The vineyard was quiet. Too quiet. Moonlight washed across the rows of vines at Stoutfellow Farm, turning the leaves silver beneath a cloudless sky. Somewhere beyond the hills, Undercliff slept peacefully. The distant lights of Waterdeep flickered on the horizon.
But among the vines, something was watching.
Previously in Waterdeep…
The adventurers of Trollskull Manor had traveled to Stoutfellow Farm seeking answers to a growing mystery. Reports of strange disturbances and animated scarecrows had drawn the attention of the Emerald Enclave, and what began as a simple investigation had quickly become something more unsettling.
The previous session ended on a tense note. Standing alone among the vineyard rows, Kiril Shadowdancer found himself approached by a stranger in the darkness.
Before words could be exchanged, Fluffy reacted. The feral wolverine exploded from beneath Kiril’s cloak in a blur of fur, claws, and protective fury.
For a moment, violence seemed inevitable. Then the stranger extended a hand.
Fluffy sniffed and the vineyard held its breath. And somehow, impossibly, the wolverine decided not to bite him.
That was where we left our heroes.
A Stranger Beneath the Moon
Character Spotlight: Fluffy
Before a single scarecrow appeared, Fluffy stole the scene.
The feral wolverine’s protective reaction to Red Head’s arrival transformed what could have been a routine introduction into one of the session’s most memorable moments. For several tense seconds, the fate of the group’s newest companion rested entirely on whether an exceptionally grumpy wolverine approved of him.
Fortunately for Red Head, Fluffy’s verdict was “acceptable.”
For now.
As the tension eased, the newcomer finally introduced himself. His name was Red Head.
The wizard cut an unusual figure beneath the moonlight. Pale-faced and sharp-featured, he looked almost skeletal at first glance, his crimson robes hanging loosely from his frame. In one hand he carried a peculiar goblet adorned with a skull motif.
Naturally, that immediately became the most important thing in the vineyard. Doc wasted no time marching over to inspect it. “What’s that for?” The answer was somehow stranger than the question.
Apple juice. Not wine, not a potion, not some sinister necromantic concoction. Apple juice. Magical apple juice, apparently.
The New Guy’s First Impression
Most adventurers introduce themselves with impressive stories. Red Head introduced himself with a self-refilling goblet of magical apple juice.
The party accepted him immediately. Because, honestly, what else could they do?
The goblet could refill itself endlessly, and Red Head seemed perfectly content to discuss the finer points of enchanted beverages while standing in a haunted vineyard filled with moving shadows.
The party quickly learned that he had also been sent by the Emerald Enclave to investigate the same disturbances they were tracking.
Whatever was happening at Stoutfellow Farm had attracted more attention than anyone realized. And now the group had another ally. At least for the moment.
“For Doc, the greatest mystery in the vineyard wasn’t the shadows, it was why Kiril had a wolverine and he still didn’t have a dog.”
Shapes Between the Vines
With introductions complete, attention returned to the problem at hand. Something was moving among the vineyard rows.
The adventurers had seen it several times already. Dark shapes. Brief movement. A glimpse of something where nothing should have been.
Every time they focused on it, it disappeared. The figures never remained visible long enough to identify. Just long enough to be noticed.
The group moved cautiously into the vineyard, attempting to determine what was stalking them through the rows of vines. Light became their first weapon. A stone enchanted with magic was hurled into the darkness, bouncing between the rows and casting pale illumination across the leaves.
For a moment, the vineyard appeared empty. Then movement flickered at the edge of vision. And vanished again.
The Vineyard Refuses to Explain Itself
At the Table
Sometimes the scariest encounters begin long before initiative is rolled.
For nearly an hour, the party investigated flickering shadows, uncertain sightings, and strange movements between the vineyard rows. The scarecrows weren’t attacking, they were watching.
That uncertainty created far more tension than any combat encounter could have generated on its own.
The deeper the party looked, the less certain they became. Perception checks were rolled. The results only made things stranger. No one seemed to agree on what they had seen.
One adventurer was certain there had only been a single figure. Another swore there were three. Someone else insisted there had been five. The shadows refused to remain consistent.
Every glance seemed to reveal a different answer. The vineyard offered no explanation. Only uncertainty.
The adventurers spread out, searching between the rows and attempting to corner whatever lurked in the darkness. Yet every time they thought they had found the source of the movement, it slipped away again. Always just beyond the edge of the light. Always one step ahead.
“The vineyard offered no explanation. Only uncertainty.”
A Cup Full of Light
If one light source wasn’t enough, perhaps another would help. Red Head’s enchanted goblet soon became the latest solution.
A Light spell transformed the strange cup into a glowing beacon that illuminated the surrounding vineyard. Now the wizard carried a floating lantern of magical apple juice. It should have made things easier.
Instead, it somehow made everything worse. The darkness now had edges.
“The more light they created, the more darkness seemed determined to remain hidden.”
And things kept moving just beyond them. The vineyard seemed larger than before. The spaces between the vines felt deeper. Every shadow looked capable of hiding something.
The players began to realize they weren’t hunting monsters. They were being watched by them.
Through the Fog
The vineyard sequence marks one of the campaign’s first true horror investigations. Nothing attacks, nothing speaks, nothing reveals itself.
The heroes simply watch shadows move through moonlit vines and slowly realize they aren’t alone. Sometimes imagination does more work than any monster stat block.
When the Shadows Stopped Running
Eventually, the uncertainty reached its breaking point. A shape shifted. Then another. The movement was unmistakable. Whatever had been hiding was no longer trying very hard.
Weapons were drawn; spells were prepared. The group braced themselves. Then came the words every adventurer recognizes.
“Roll initiative.”
Dice clattered across the table. The vineyard’s patience had finally run out.
The Scarecrows Rise
“The heroes had spent the evening chasing shadows. Now the shadows were charging back.”
Raven acted first. She raised a hand and launched a Firebolt toward one of the distant shapes. The spell streaked through the darkness. And missed.
But the brief burst of fire illuminated something standing motionless among the vines. Something that should not have been moving.
A scarecrow.
Not a simple bundle of straw assembled by a farmer. An animated thing, its burlap face slowly turned toward the party; its wooden frame twitched; its straw-filled limbs shifted with unnatural purpose.
The vineyard was not empty. Then the rest appeared. Five scarecrows emerged from hiding among the rows, bursting from the darkness that had concealed them for so long.
The heroes had spent the evening chasing shadows. Now the shadows were charging back.
Fluffy lunged forward with a furious snarl. Steel flashed. Magic ignited. Red Head prepared his first spell as a member of the group, and beneath the moonlit vines of Stoutfellow Farm, battle erupted.
“The shadows had never been fleeing. They had been surrounding them all along.”
To Be Continued…
Straw scattered across the vineyard floor. Firelight danced between the rows. The scarecrows closed in from every direction.
And the heroes of Trollskull Manor learned a terrifying truth. The shadows had never been fleeing, they had been surrounding them all along.
The fight for Stoutfellow Farm had finally begun.
Theme of the Session: Unease
Every answer in this session created another question.
- Who was Red Head?
- How many figures were actually moving among the vines?
- Why did every adventurer see something different?
- What exactly was hiding in the darkness?
By the time the scarecrows finally revealed themselves, the party had already spent most of the evening feeling hunted.
The combat simply confirmed what they already suspected. Something was very wrong at Stoutfellow Farm.
