Dragon Heist • Session 35 Recap • Trollskull Manor
Shadows and Smoke
Played: February 27, 2026
So, what’s the plan?

Previously in Waterdeep…
The search for answers had carried the party far beyond the streets of Waterdeep.
What began as strange happenings on a nearby farm had led them through fields, forests, and forgotten places beneath the city itself. Along the way they had uncovered unsettling truths, faced horrors both living and undead, and discovered that some mysteries only deepened the closer one came to solving them.
Now, beneath a moonlit sky beyond the city’s walls, the hunt continued.
Across the Hilltops
The shadow appeared only for a moment; a dark figure silhouetted against the crest of a distant hill before disappearing into the night.
The party moved immediately. Doc and Clover hurried ahead, following a trail they had stumbled across among the rolling fields. At one point Clover attempted to carry Doc like a backpack to gain a better vantage point over the grass. The effort was short-lived, but the attempt provided a welcome moment of laughter amid the tension.
Elsewhere, Kiril, Maple, and Raven tried a more cautious approach, circling the hillside and moving as quietly as they could, but the night had other ideas. A snapped branch here, a misplaced footstep there; every sound seemed unnaturally loud beneath the silence of the countryside.
“The farther they ventured into the darkness, the more uncertain everything became.”
Then came the tracks. Fresh prints cut through the earth, drawing the hunters onward. For several hopeful minutes, it seemed they had finally found their quarry, until they realized they were following the trail left by their own companions.
The discovery earned equal parts embarrassment and frustration. The farther they ventured into the darkness, the more uncertain everything became. More shadows appeared along distant ridges, shapes moved where no shapes should have been, and somewhere beyond the next rise, something continued to watch them.
Shadows Everywhere
Throughout the session, the party repeatedly misread the clues before them. They followed the wrong tracks, they chased uncertain shadows, they mistook shapes in the darkness for threats. Even Red Head’s arrival came as a complete surprise.
This session’s central theme isn’t finding answers; it’s learning how difficult it can be to see clearly when surrounded by uncertainty.
Rows of Vines and Moonlight
The scattered pursuit eventually brought the companions back together.
At the bottom of the hill, they found themselves standing among long rows of vineyard vines stretching into the darkness. The terrain changed everything. The vines ran north and south while the party searched east and west, creating narrow corridors of visibility where shapes could appear and disappear in an instant.
Every row looked the same, every shadow seemed significant. Somewhere ahead, a dark figure crossed a narrow stream and vanished from sight. The party moved carefully, quietly. Watching, waiting.
Kiril conjured an invisible hand and used it to part the vines, hoping to reveal whatever lurked beyond the next row. Yet every promising shape seemed to dissolve into uncertainty the moment he focused on it.
The night refused to surrender its secrets; then Raven had an idea.
A Stone of Light
A simple stone; a simple spell. Sometimes those are enough. Raven cast Light upon a rock and handed it to Doc.
With all the enthusiasm of someone given permission to throw something, Doc launched the glowing stone deep into the darkness. The rock arced across the vineyard like a falling star.
“For a single heartbeat, moonlight gave way to brilliance.”
For a single heartbeat, moonlight gave way to brilliance. Rows of vines flashed into view. The stream glittered, the shadows retreated, and standing near the edge of the illumination was what appeared to be a scarecrow. Silent. Motionless. Watching.
Before anyone could react, something skittered away from the light and vanished once more into darkness. The hunt was not over; but they were getting closer.
A Voice from the Dark
First Impressions Matter
Few introductions begin with sneaking up behind a group of adventurers in the middle of a monster hunt. Even fewer survive an encounter with a suspicious wolverine.
Red Head managed both.
Kiril crossed the stream first. Raven followed. The others trailed behind. All eyes remained fixed on the distant shape. That was when a voice spoke from directly behind them.
“So, what’s the plan?”
“So what’s the plan?”
-Red Head
Kiril nearly jumped out of his skin. Someone had somehow approached unnoticed. Not a scarecrow. Not a monster. A person. A stranger wrapped in a cloak, standing comfortably among them as though he had always been there.
The appearance was so sudden, so unexpected, that for a moment nobody knew quite what to do. Which, naturally, meant Fluffy took immediate offense.
Fluffy’s Judgment
The wolverine emerged from beneath Kiril’s cloak with teeth bared and fur standing on end.
The newcomer froze. Fluffy growled. The tension hung in the air for several long moments. Then the stranger slowly reached into a pocket and produced an apple.
Fluffy remained unimpressed.
“I think meat might work better,” Kiril offered.
The stranger nodded thoughtfully, then asked perhaps the bravest question of the evenin. “Can I pet him?”
Better Than a Background Check
The party may have had questions about the mysterious stranger.
Fluffy had only one: Can this person be trusted?
After a tense introduction, a careful approach, and a successful petting attempt, the wolverine delivered his verdict: Approved.
“You can try,” Kiril replied. “He’s a little irritated right now.”
That was putting it mildly. Carefully, the newcomer extended a closed fist.
Fluffy sniffed. Waited. Judged. The entire vineyard seemed to hold its breath.
Finally, the wolverine relaxed. A rough tongue brushed across the stranger’s hand. Just like that, the verdict had been delivered.
Whatever else this mysterious newcomer might be, Fluffy had decided he was acceptable. And that was good enough for everyone else.
“Whatever else this mysterious newcomer might be, Fluffy had decided he was acceptable.”
To Be Continued…
The scarecrow mystery remained unsolved. The shadows still moved through the fields beyond Waterdeep and somewhere in the darkness, answers waited.
But before the night could reveal them, it offered something unexpected instead. A new companion, a new mystery, and a simple question hanging in the air beneath the moonlit vines: Who exactly was this stranger who had appeared from nowhere?
The hunt would continue next session.
