How to Homebrew a Magic Item on D&D Beyond (The Easy Way)

TL;DR: In minutes, you can homebrew a D&D Beyond magic item by starting from a template, filling out basics, and adding modifiers. Here’s the exact click-path and text to use for a polished, table-ready item.

Magic items land best when they grow out of story. At my Voxels & Valor table, our paladin lives and breathes the trident. Nothing in the books hit the right flavor and fixed his lagging initiative—so I made one: Ocean’s Reach, a rare trident with +2 to attack/damage and +2 to initiative, with a little extra love underwater.

Homebrew isn’t breaking the game—it’s shaping it so your best moments land.

Step 1 — Start with a Template

On D&D Beyond, go to Collections → Homebrew Creations → Create Magic Item. You’ll see a list of official items you can clone as a starting point. Using a template lets D&D Beyond handle rules boilerplate.

For Ocean’s Reach, pick Trident +2 and click Create.

Tip: If your item is a weapon, clone that weapon’s magic version (+1/+2/+3). If it’s armor, start from the closest armor match.

Step 2 — Fill Out the Basics

  • Name: Ocean’s Reach
  • Rarity: Rare
  • Base Item Type: Weapon → Base Weapon: Trident
  • Magic Item Type: Weapon (default)
  • Description: Use the example text below—or your own lore + rules.

Scroll and click Create Magic Item to save the “shell.” The page reloads and unlocks advanced options (including Modifiers).

Step 3 — Add the Magic (Modifiers)

Go to the Modifiers section → Add a Modifier. Create the following:

Add more if needed (skills, movement, resistances). Keep mechanics visible in the description so players and DMs share the same expectations.

Step 4 — Save, Share, and Use

  • Save Changes.
  • Find it under Collections → My Homebrew Creations.
  • Share with a campaign or assign to a character.
  • Optionally publish for the community once it’s table-tested.

Flavor first, rules clear. If a power matters, write it in the description and back it with a modifier.

Example Text: Ocean’s Reach

Forged from the bones of a sea giant, Ocean’s Reach hums with slow aquatic power. Kelp wraps its handle, and barnacles cling to its tines like ancient battle honors.

  • Magic Weapon. You gain a +2 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this weapon.
  • Enhanced Initiative. While wielding this weapon, you gain a +2 bonus to initiative rolls.
  • Water-Enhanced Strikes. When you are underwater, the trident gains an additional +1 bonus to attack and damage rolls.

  • Clone a close template (weapon → that weapon’s +1/+2/+3).
  • Write clear rules in the description (who, what, when).
  • Back rules with modifiers so sheets calculate automatically.
