Adventurers standing among burned scarecrow remains in a moonlit vineyard while a lone figure follows a wolf into the distant hills beneath the winter night sky.
The scarecrows are defeated, but the clues left behind reveal a deeper mystery. As the party prepares to return home, one companion follows an unexpected path into the darkness beyond the vineyards.

Previously in Waterdeep…

The road to Undercliff had led the companions far from the comfort of Trollskull Alley.

What began as a simple request from the Snobeedle family had become something far stranger. Animated scarecrows stalked the countryside. Hidden clues pointed toward an unknown creator. And after days spent investigating farms, vineyards, and frightened locals, the party finally found themselves standing in a frozen field beneath the winter stars.

The mystery remained unsolved. But one chapter of it was about to come to an end.

Undercliff Recap

The scarecrow mystery spanned multiple sessions:

  • Strange attacks reported near local farms
  • Investigations among Undercliff families
  • Encounters with animated scarecrows
  • Clues pointing toward a hidden creator
  • Final confrontation in the vineyards

Session 38 concludes the immediate threat, but not the larger mystery.

The Last Scarecrow

The battle resumed where the previous session had left off.

Across the darkened field, the final scarecrow lurched through smoke and frost, refusing to fall despite the punishment it had already endured. Steel carved through burlap. Magic scorched moldy straw. Again and again the construct staggered, only to continue its relentless advance.

The creature seemed less alive than stubborn, yet even the most stubborn monsters eventually run out of luck.

As the fight dragged on, Maple unleashed a crashing tidal wave that swept across the battlefield, sending water and debris surging through the field. For a brief moment, the farm resembled a storm-tossed shoreline rather than a vineyard in the countryside of Waterdeep.

The scarecrow survived, but not for long.

A final barrage of attacks brought the construct crashing to the earth. Flames consumed what remained of its unnatural form, and the fields finally fell silent. For the first time since arriving in Undercliff, the immediate threat was gone. The scarecrows were dead. The mystery behind them was not.

“The scarecrows were dead. The mystery behind them was not.”

Beneath the Burlap

With the battle finally over, the companions turned their attention to the remains. What they found raised more questions than answers.

The scarecrows proved to be little more than old farm clothes and rotting straw animated by lingering magic. Yet buried within their ruined forms were strange discoveries that suggested deliberate design rather than random enchantment.

“Four scarecrows. Four opals. Four empty settings.”

One by one, the party uncovered small opalescent gems hidden among the constructs, four in total, each roughly the size of a bean, each identical to the others. The discoveries seemed too deliberate to ignore.

Then Kiril found something even stranger. Among the remains rested a gold ring set with a single opal at its center. Flanking the stone were four empty settings, two on either side, as though waiting for something to complete it.

Clue Collected

Recovered from the scarecrows:

  • Four bean-sized opalescent gems
  • One gold ring
  • One central opal already set
  • Four empty settings awaiting additional stones

Kiril and Raven immediately suspected the items were connected to the scarecrows’ creation and preserved them for later study.

The connection was immediate. Four scarecrows, four opals, four empty settings. While much of the party viewed the discoveries as valuable treasure, Kiril and Raven recognized them for what they truly were: clues.

The pair carefully cataloged the findings for future research, convinced they had uncovered the first real evidence pointing toward whoever, or whatever, had created the scarecrows in the first place.

The threat had been eliminated, but the investigation had only just begun.

Proof of the Deed

Once the excitement of discovery faded, the companions faced a much more practical problem. How exactly does one prove the destruction of five murderous scarecrows?

The answer, naturally, was obvious: take the heads.

“How exactly does one prove the destruction of five murderous scarecrows? The answer, naturally, was obvious. Take the heads.”

What followed was perhaps the least dignified portion of the entire adventure. The heroes of Trollskull Manor, defenders of Waterdeep, explorers of hidden crypts, and investigators of dark mysteries, spent an alarming amount of time removing scarecrow heads from scarecrow bodies.

There were debates, there were suggestions, there were complications. At least one attempt involved Fluffy enthusiastically helping with the process, producing results that were considerably messier than they were useful.

Eventually, the group succeeded and five severed scarecrow heads were gathered together as proof of their victory. The sight would have been ridiculous under any circumstances. After everything they had endured, it felt oddly satisfying.

With evidence secured and clues tucked safely away, the companions prepared for the journey back to the Stoutfellow farm. The threat was ended. Payment awaited. And perhaps, at long last, a few answers.

Trophy Count

Scarecrow Heads Returned: 5

The party’s chosen proof of victory included:

✓ One burned scarecrow head
✓ Four additional severed heads
✓ Several questionable transportation methods
✓ One highly enthusiastic wolverine assistant

No Stoutfellows were consulted regarding whether this level of proof was actually necessary.

The Call of the Wild

A Quiet Goodbye

Doc’s departure marks the end of one of the campaign’s longest-running character journeys. From Death House to Trollskull Manor, he traveled beside the party through haunted halls, city streets, and countryside mysteries.

His final choice was perhaps his most fitting: Following an animal trail into the unknown.

Not everyone was ready to return. As preparations were made, Doc noticed movement in the distance. A lone wolf.

For many adventurers, such a sight would have passed without comment. For Doc, it was impossible to ignore. Curiosity led him away from the group and toward the animal. The wolf never appeared frightened. It never appeared aggressive. Instead, it simply watched. Waiting.

Doc invited Maple to follow. He declined.

He invited Clover. He declined as well.

There were scarecrow heads to carry, friends to accompany, responsibilities to see through. So Doc went alone.

At first, no one thought much of it. After all, this was hardly the first time he had wandered off after some interesting animal. It had become almost expected. Just another dog hunt, just another strange distraction, just another story to laugh about later.

The others watched him disappear into the darkness.

“Surely this wasn’t goodbye.”

Surely, he would return by morning. Surely, he would catch up with them later; surely this wasn’t goodbye.

But as Doc followed the wolf, others began to emerge from the shadows. One became two. Two became four. Before long an entire pack moved through the winter night beside him. Together they traveled southwest toward the distant mountains, disappearing beyond the fields and vineyards of Undercliff.

“And for the first time since Durst Manor, Doc’s path led somewhere the others would not follow.”

And for the first time since Durst Manor, Doc’s path led somewhere the others would not follow. No speeches, no ceremony, no dramatic farewell. Just a quiet road stretching into the darkness and a familiar adventurer chasing one last trail.

Looking Ahead

The scarecrow threat has finally been ended, yet the discovery of the opals and the mysterious ring suggests that far larger questions remain unanswered. Someone created the constructs. Someone placed those gems within them. And somewhere beyond the fields of Undercliff, the truth still waits to be uncovered.

For now, the companions begin the journey home carrying five scarecrow heads, a pocket full of clues, and one less friend at their side. Some mysteries grow deeper, some roads come to an end, and some adventurers simply follow the call of the wild.
