History Refused to Stay Buried

The heroes of Voxels & Valor battle undead on the ancient battlefield inside Wave Echo Cave as they approach the legendary Forge of Spells.
The battlefield where the Phandelver Pact made its final stand stirred once more as ancient guardians rose to defend the Forge of Spells.

There are places in every adventure where the air itself seems to remember. Wave Echo Cave had offered plenty of dangers already, collapsing passages, strange creatures, and the lingering scars of forgotten magic, but nothing prepared the party for what waited beyond the next set of stone stairs. This chamber wasn’t simply another room on a map. It was history made tangible.

The deeper we descended, the quieter the world became. Ancient weapons lay where they had fallen. Rusted armor clung to brittle bones. Dwarves, gnomes, humans, orcs, and even ogres rested together beneath centuries of dust, frozen forever in the aftermath of one final, desperate battle.

It wasn’t difficult to imagine the clash that had once shaken these caverns. The legends of the Phandelver Pact suddenly felt far less like stories and far more like memories.

Somewhere beyond this battlefield lay the Forge of Spells. And someone, or something, was still guarding the road.

The Battlefield Awakens

“The cavern answered. Not with one presence. Not with two. Nearly a dozen.”

As the party cautiously spread through the cavern, old lessons returned. The Phandelver Pact: the alliance between dwarves, gnomes, and human spellcasters. The invasion that shattered Wave Echo Cave and buried its greatest secret for centuries.

Standing among the fallen, those stories no longer belonged to history books. They surrounded us. When Lazmr reached out with Divine Sense, the cavern answered. Not with one presence, not with two. Nearly a dozen.

The tension that had quietly settled over the Discord call became almost palpable. Even separated by miles, everyone knew the same thing at once. This wasn’t over. The dead weren’t resting.

Before anyone could debate a strategy, Yami made the decision for all of us.

Memorable Moment: Fireball First, Questions Later.

When Lazmr’s Divine Sense revealed nearly a dozen undead waiting in the darkness, the table didn’t spend ten minutes planning. Yami answered with a Fireball.

Sometimes the best initiative roll is simply deciding to act.

Fire Before Questions

Sometimes the best battle plan is also the simplest. Fireball.

The spell erupted into the center of the battlefield just as ancient corpses began clawing themselves upright. Flame raced across forgotten bones, consuming several undead before they could even take their first shambling steps.

The blast ignited two ancient braziers, bathing the cavern in flickering orange light that danced across cracked stone and weathered armor. For a brief moment, the battlefield looked alive again, only this time, the heroes belonged to a different age.

“The heroes of the Phandelver Pact had fallen here centuries before. This time, a new company stood their ground.”

The opening strike became the signal for everyone else.

Zend surged forward with terrifying efficiency, splitting one ghoul nearly in half before spinning into another with practiced precision. His relentless swarm darted through the air, delivering the final sting to creatures that had somehow survived the axe itself.

Akkira answered with a flock of spectral birds that swept across the chamber like ghostly predators, pecking and slashing until another undead guardian collapsed beneath the assault.

Lazmr met the charging horrors head-on, driving his trusty trident through ancient flesh with remarkable effectiveness. It may never have been forged for glorious battle, but by this point in the campaign it had become every bit as iconic as any enchanted blade.

The Lore of the Realm: The Phandelver Pact

Long before the party entered Wave Echo Cave, dwarves, gnomes, and human spellcasters joined together in an alliance known as the Phandelver Pact. Their greatest achievement was the Forge of Spells, where master-crafted weapons could be imbued with powerful enchantments.

The battlefield discovered in this session marks one of the final clashes that ended the Pact and buried the Forge beneath centuries of silence. Until now.

Meanwhile, Larn kept the pressure on from range, scorching enemies already reeling from the opening barrage.

Then there was Scabbers. By now our table had developed an amusing tradition of underestimating tiny companions. Yami’s owl had already proven that great things could come in small packages. Scabbers, however, seemed determined to win the contest.

The tiny lizard scrambled onto a nearby table, puffed out its chest, and unleashed an astonishing stream of acid that dissolved yet another undead guardian where it stood.

Tiny lizard. Ridiculously large acid breath. The legend of Scabbers continued to grow.

Party Spotlight: When Teamwork Becomes Second Nature

This battle showcased something more important than powerful spells or lucky dice. Every member of the party instinctively filled their role.

  • Yami controlled the battlefield.
  • Zend dismantled enemies before they could react.
  • Lazmr held the front line.
  • Akkira disrupted groups of foes.
  • Larn supported from range.
  • Yatendouji revealed hidden threats.
  • Even Scabbers and Carlos found memorable moments.

The victory wasn’t built on individual heroics. It was built on trust.

Lightning in the Shadows

While the battle raged across the cavern floor, Yatendouji’s attention drifted upward where darkness still concealed the ledges above. Drawing upon his Blood Hunter training, he invoked his Crimson Rite, lightning crackling along his crossbow before releasing a brilliant shot into the shadows.

The bolt found its mark. More importantly, it illuminated what had been hiding there: additional undead watched from above.

The first battle had never truly been the whole battle. The cavern still held secrets.

Cliffhanger: The Green Flame

Victory lasted only a few moments. An undead guardian escaped deeper into the forge works. Then came the eerie green glow beyond the ancient bellows.

Another initiative roll; another battle. And the unmistakable feeling that whatever waited ahead was far more dangerous than anything left behind.

The Calm Before the Next Storm

Behind the Adventure: A Quiet Turning Point

Looking back, this session marked a subtle shift in the campaign. The players didn’t realize it in the moment, but this was one of the first battles where the party’s coordination felt effortless. They weren’t simply surviving encounters anymore, they were beginning to fight like veterans.

Only later did we realize just how overwhelming that first assault had been.

Before the undead could fully organize themselves, the party had dismantled nearly every threat in the chamber through coordinated teamwork, clever positioning, and a remarkable display of confidence built across thirty sessions of adventure.

“It wasn’t that the enemies had grown weaker. The heroes had simply become stronger.”

It wasn’t that the enemies had become weaker. The heroes had become stronger.

Their victories no longer relied on desperation or luck alone. They trusted one another. They understood their roles. Every spell, every strike, and every decision seemed to build naturally upon the last. For the first time, it truly felt like we were watching seasoned adventurers instead of survivors.

Yet Wave Echo Cave wasn’t finished testing them. One final undead escaped deeper into the mine.

The pursuit led beyond the ancient battlefield and into the forgotten forge works themselves, where silent bellows, abandoned furnaces, and cold channels hinted at the incredible industry that had once filled these halls.

Then came the green light. A faint, ghostly glow flickered beyond the machinery.

An uneasy silence settled over the party. It wasn’t curiosity we felt. It was recognition. Whatever waited ahead was different.

Initiative dice rolled once more. And that is where we left the heroes, standing at the threshold of the Forge of Spells itself, with ancient magic stirring once again beneath the mountain.

“History had awakened. The question was whether our heroes would survive long enough to become part of it.”

Around the Table

“Tiny lizard. Ridiculously large acid breath.”

Some jokes never get old. By Session 30, Scabbers had earned a reputation for producing impossibly destructive acid attacks despite being one of the smallest creatures in the entire party. Every time the little lizard opened its mouth, everyone at the table leaned forward to see what would melt next.
