Scene Starters – 12 Ways to Open a Session
You don’t have to spend a ton of gold to create an atmosphere of fun.

The First Words Matter
Every session has a spark — a moment that says we’re back in the world.
How you open sets the tone for everything that follows.
You don’t need fireworks; you just need focus.
Here are twelve ways to start a session that pull your players in before the dice even roll.
1. The Flashback
Start in the middle of a memory.
“Smoke rises. A village burns. Where were you when it happened?”
Revealing character backstory through action builds investment instantly.
2.The Cliffhanger Continuation
You dodge barely avoiding the swinging blade of the greatsword. What do you do next?
Pick up right where you left off — mid-blade swing, spell still hanging in the air.
Momentum is its own magic.
3. The Tavern Twist
Sure, start in a tavern — but make it weird.
“The bard stops playing. Every patron turns to look at you. The music doesn’t start again.”
4. The Dream
A surreal vision, a whispered warning, or a symbol that doesn’t make sense… yet.
It gives your players a puzzle to chew on right away.
5. The Rumor Mill
“You overhear something in the market — about a fire, a noble’s death, and a shipment gone missing.”
Three threads. Let them choose one.
6. The Chase
Skip the calm.
“You’re running. Footsteps behind you. Who’s chasing you, and why?”
7. The Letter
A hand-delivered message, sealed in wax. A name they don’t recognize.
Cheap prop, big intrigue.
8. The Consequence
Start with aftermath.
“The smoke clears. The creature’s body fades. You’re left holding the dagger — and everyone’s staring.”
9. The Split Screen
Describe what each character is doing separately before pulling them together.
Gives everyone spotlight time right at the start.
10. The Strange Arrival
“You wake up on a wagon. The driver doesn’t have a face.”
Instant tone-setter — creepy, mysterious, memorable.
11. The Unexpected NPC
An old friend. A rival. A letter carrier who won’t stop talking.
Familiarity is a shortcut to engagement.
12. The World Reacts
Remind them the world moves without them.
“A new decree hangs on every wall. Someone’s face is on the wanted posters.”
It turns passive players into participants.
The DM’s Secret Weapon
“The first minute of your session tells your players how to play the next three hours.”
Opening scenes don’t have to be big — just intentional.
Whether you start with a bang, a whisper, or a strange dream, the goal is the same:
to make your players forget the real world the moment they sit down.
